Mattamuskeet, Pocosin Lakes & Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges 2008
The National Wildlife Refuges at Lake Mattamuskeet and Pocosin Lakes are the winter home to migratory tundra swans, snow geese, wading birds and other waterfowl. The best times to photograph at these locations are between late November and some time in February. The birds are not acclimated to people so long lenses are required. There are dirt roads near the canals and impoundments at Lake Mattamuskeet and the grain fields where geese and swans feed at Pocosin Lakes so you can often photograph from a vehicle. The birds do not seem to mind vehicles but if you leave the vehicle they may spook.
